L’air du logement : recherches d'un minimum spatial France-Belgique-Grande-Bretagne, 1780-1880

Légitimées par des critères physiologiques établis dès le XVIIIe siècle, les recherches d’un minimum spatial par habitant au XIXe siècle participent des tentatives d’ajustement de l’espace domestique au corps organique. Situées en marge de plusieurs disciplines – urbanisme, architecture, construction, médecine, biologie, chimie et physique –, elles questionnent la relation entre théorie et pratique. Caractéristique de l’histoire des techniques, ce questionnement transdisciplinaire constitue l’essentiel de la présente problématique. Toutefois, comme le montre l’étude comparative, la définition d’un minimum spatial n’échappe pas aux contraintes socio-économiques du logement. Même si l’argumentation se médicalise, la médicalisation de l’espace domestique est partielle. La définition d’un minimum spatial par habitant au XIXe siècle consiste moins dans une médicalisation de l’air domestique que dans une domestication de l’air intérieur.Legitimised by physiological criteria established since the 18th century, the research of a space minimum per occupant in the 19th century partakes of the attempts to adjust domestic space to the organic body. Situated on the fringe of several disciplines – town planning, architecture, building, medicine, biology, chemistry and physics – it questions the relation between theory and practice. Characteristic of the history of technology, this interdisciplinary questioning constitutes the essential of the present problematic. However, as shown by the comparative study, the definition of a space minimum does not escape the socio-economic constraints of housing. Even if the argumentation medicalizes itself, the domestic space medicalization is partial. The definition of a space minimum per occupant in the 19th century consists less in a domestic air medicalization than in an indoor air domestication.
