Tensile Structures. Volume II

Otto, Frei (1925-2015)

1969

Résumé

The subject of nonrigid architectural structures, begun with a discussion of pneumatic structures in Volume I, is here continued with a detailed investigation of structures under tensile loads: cables, nets, membranes, etc. Stresses and forces are analyzed in detail, as are sup-porting structures. Suspension bridges and tents are the most commonly known examples of structures under tensile stress, as distinguished from rigid archi-tectural forms, which are under com-pressive stress. Nonrigid structures have the advantages of mobility, light weight, ease and speed of erection, and low cost. The book, translated from the German, is the second of two volumes addressed to engineers as well as to architects. The chapter covering the calculation of cable nets, by Friedrich Karl Schleyer, includes a section written with nonspe-cialists in mind. This should be of great help to architects in facilitating the rapid determinaton of parameters for practical use. (editeur)
